Finishing the Addition Roof

Last time I posted concerning the addition, the rafters had been put up!  The Saturday after that (which was 3 Saturday's ago) the roof was finished!  3 of the windows were put in as well!

While Lexi was up on the roof taking these pictures, she took a shot of our lovely garden:

There you have an "aerial" view of our garden patch...I think it's bigger than it's ever been before (shock!). :)  At the time of this picture we had kale, spinach, various lettuces, broccoli, beets, onions, potatoes, pea pods, and peppers growing.

That's a long way up! :)

After the guys finished the roof, we had lunch!

Doesn't that look delicious?  (And the desserts aren't even pictured! :) I'm so glad I remembered to actually get a picture of all the lunch food!  

One Saturday, we had ordered a deli tray for the guys to have sandwiches.  Well, we discovered that it is much cheaper to buy different packages of lunch meat and cheese at the store, and arrange it yourself, than it is to buy a tray! :)  Lexi rolled and organized every piece of cheese and meat on the above pictured plate.  She also added the sprigs of parsley for the "fresh" look. :)

After lunch, the guys nailed some more stuff in (I forgot what it was called :).

Next came the windows!

Thus concluded another day of addition work!!  The crew is coming out again this Saturday to do some more stuff, but I won't have any pictures for you because Hannah and I graduate that day!!!!!!!!  Ah!!!!

And, since I'm already here, I wanted to show you some pictures of our turkeys.  Yep, we have three baby turkeys!  The poor things haven't appeared on the family blog yet, simply because I've forgotten. :)

 Of course, these pictures were taken about a month ago, so the turkeys are much bigger now, but these pictures will have to do! :)

If you're wondering why we bought three turkeys, I'll leave you to guess simply from their (nick) names:  Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's. :)

Spring 2012 Home School Night

There seems to have been a long string of addition posts, so, to break up the monotony, I decided to post about our recent home school night! :)  (Hopefully there will be another addition update up here next week.)

Last week, on the spur of the moment, we had our "end of the year" home school night!  Na-naw and Paw-paw were able to come over, eat dinner with us (Paw-paw arrived a little later due to traveling), and listen to everything we had to share.

The night started off wonderfully with one of our favorite meals:  Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes (whipped to creamy perfection!)!

We also had some sort of veggies and some awesome rolls but I didn't get them in the photo. :)

After dinner, we shared some of our school stuff starting with the oldest.

Hannah shared one of her WriteShop papers.

She also played one beautiful song on the piano!

I was able to get away with sharing only one thing (WriteShop) from school!  :)

 

 Lexi read her report on Charlotte Moon, played a lovely song on the piano, and shared some of her artwork with us.

After Josiah was finished, Lydia said she was going to play a song on the piano.  So she went over, sat down, and started plunking any and every note (sporadically) on the piano! 

After she displayed her piano creativity, she recited one of her character cards.

Then Mama ran through all the other character cards, closing the night with Scripture (what could be better?).

After everyone had shared, we ate some delicious chocolate pie with home made whipped cream!

Thus ended our homeschool night for the 2011-2012 school year! :)

Putting the I-Beam In and Building the Roof

Last Thursday was the day when some of the building crew came out to put the I-Beam in.  B&G Metals delivered the beam earlier that day and our neighbor, Mr. Hamill, (and two of his friends) came and took it off for us.  

You're probably wondering how we managed to get a multiple hundred pound beam into our addition.  Well, one of the building guys, Mr. Woodson, works for Dominion Power and was able to use one of their trucks.

Caleb was actually taking all of these pictures and I was watching from the inside.  It was slightly scary seeing the huge beam swaying back and forth...it definitely provided for a few tense moments!  If that beamed crashed into our house we would be in big trouble!

 The beam  had a scaffold placed underneath it to keep it in place until we could get the supporting columns made.

Once the beam was in place, Seth got to move the crane away from the beam!

Since the beam was done, Mr. Woodson went to pull out of our back yard and drove over our fallow garden (that was covered in weeds).  Even though the ground has been unused for about 2 years, it was still soft and the Dominion truck got stuck!

Daddy went and got some mulch to put under the tires.

I left to go to church with Hannah and a friend so I didn't see the truck get out. It was gone when we got home, so I guess they eventually made it out of the garden!  :)

The crew came out again on Saturday and put the columns under the I-Beam and started building the roof!

The first project was taking out the window in Mama and Daddy's room.  (Remember how it had to be removed because it was in the way of the roof line?)

Nick, a friend from our church, worked on taking out the nails around the window frame.

When the nails were out, Mr. Woodson removed the frame.

Then (not pictured) they nailed some OSB over the hole to keep the bugs out!

After about 3 hours of work, all the rafters were up and they started nailing some OSB down.

 The crew had to leave early that day, so the roof isn't completely covered right now.  This Saturday, though, they're planning on completing everything regarding the roof (including shingles!).
